Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has come out to dispel reports that Kenya is involved as an architect in the Sudan war.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Mwaura clarified that Kenya is only involved in the war from a diplomatic standpoint, acting as a mediator between warring
factions in Sudan to achieve a ceasefire.
He added that Kenya’s peacekeeping and conflict resolution is informed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) process, chaired and initiated by President William Ruto to bring together the warring factions, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
“Kenya
has facilitated the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement and has supported
Sudan’s democratic transition since 2019 through African Union (AU) and IGAD mediation,” he stated.
“President
Ruto has been engaged in active diplomacy and has led IGAD peace efforts,
chairing the IGAD quartet and hosting Burhan and Hemedti to push for dialogue
and a ceasefire.”
Mwaura added that Kenya is solely advocating for peace resolution and
prioritizing dialogue and has pledged
USD 2 million (Ksh.258.4 million) in
humanitarian support for the crisis in Sudan.
Kenya
has also called for regional and international co-operation under the African
Union (AU), IGAD and the United Nations to
support the Sudan peace
process.
“Kenya
remains committed to its diplomatic and humanitarian support and aid. Kenya
affirms diplomatic and technical support, the hosting of refugees and provision
of a safe space for dialogue, leveraging on its historical peace building in
the region”, added Mwaura.
The Spokesperson
added that Kenya’s position in the war will remain the same, adding that any changes will be
communicated and misinformation should not be encouraged on the matter.
