Students at Wheatland School left a recent Academic Bowl in Delavan with ribbons in their hands and smiles on their faces, as several placed in a variety of categories.
Representing Wheatland at the Bowl were sixth-graders Carleigh Britt, Aaron Crane, Wren Hawkins, Kameron Kruzan and Karcher Singleton; seventh-graders Mila Coe, Riley Daly, Austin Jurgens, Felix Leonard and Tyson Meracle; and eighth-graders Mary Cavanaugh, Elaina Hetland, Mackenzie Idell, Cambree Lois, and Jaxon Morehouse.
Students were nominated by teachers to compete within their designated area of expertise, including math, science, English/language arts, or social studies. Each participated in an individual test of subject knowledge, a current events team quiz, and a team STEAM challenge.
Meracle placed first overall in seventh grade math. Morehouse placed first overall in eighth grade math. Hetland placed first overall in eighth grade English/language arts.

Britt placed second overall in sixth grade English/language arts. Crane placed second overall in sixth grade math. Kruzan placed third overall in sixth grade science.
Coe placed third overall in seventh grade math. Leonard placed third overall in seventh grade English/language arts. Jurgens placed third overall in seventh grade science. Daly placed third overall in seventh grade social studies. Lois placed third overall in eighth grade social studies.
The team’s efforts in individual tests and teamwork during the current events quiz placed Wheatland second overall in the Academic Bowl.
When asked to share their overall thoughts regarding the 2024 Academic Bowl, the majority of the students were surprised at how much knowledge they had in their area of expertise. The current events team quiz was most enjoyed because students had the opportunity to work together across grade levels and showcase each other’s strengths.
